Marine Scientists x MEGAN OLIVER – Marine Biologist

Megan is a scientist at NIWA, and is currently doing her PhD in marine biology, specialising in the ecology and behaviour of lobsters! Megan was the scientific researcher for Q Careers and the new 13 part television series, QTV. She has a one year old baby, Levi, and lives in Wellington with Levi's dad, Hilary – he works at NIWA too and has a PHD in nuclear physics. KEVIN MACKAY – Geologist/Volcanologist

Kevin started his scientific life as a volcanologist and has carried out his studies from the top of Ruapehu to the depths of underwater volcanoes off the coast of Whakatane. He has worked in places ranging from Hawaii to the Antarctic. He is now working for NIWA mapping the seabed with high tech scanning technology. KELLY MAY – Ngati Kahungunu – Maori Development Group, NIWA

Kelly May works in the Maori development group at NIWA, focusing on marine life that can be eaten, such as Paua, Mussels, Sea Cucumber and Kina. This specialist group works closely with Maori to preserve and sustain the seabed and foreshore around New Zealand and to protect kai moana (sea food). Kelly travels a lot and loves all sorts of sports ... and also to eat her research subjects! Dr MARK ORAMS – Marine Mammal Scientist

Mark is a Marine Mammal Scientist specialising in the behaviour of the marine mammals dolphins and whales. He is a lecturer at Massey University in Auckland. Mark is also a professional sailor and has sailed to many places around the world. Heis the Executive Director of The Sir Peter Blake Trust which is dedicated to protecting the environment, to leadership, and to promoting research into, and respect for, the sea.

Agricultural Science x DR JAMIE ATARIA & CRAIG PAULING – Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research)

Jamie Ataria is a toxicologist. He specialises in toxins or poisons in the environment and works out how to identify them and also how to prevent them entering environmental areas, in particular around marae.

Craig is a research assistant who specialises in waste management. He has worked with Ngai Tahu for several years and is now researching a Marae-based waste management model for the future. Both Jamie and Craig integrate Maori traditional knowledge with scientific research and methodologies. IAN KNOWLES – Farm Systems, Crop & Food Research

IAN KNOWLES – Farm Systems, Crop & Food Research

Ian studies grass! His parents moved to the country when he was a boy and he loved the farming life. His research helps to improve farming systems and includes software development as well as lab based research to understand what animals eat and how to improve grasses. He hopes to use his knowledge when he buys his own farm in the future. DR SARAH DODD – Mycologist

Dr Sarah Dodd is a specialist in mushrooms (mycology). She is working with forest research where they are planting pine forests while planting gourmet mushrooms at the base of the trees – double planting! Her research will contribute to new markets for mushrooms bringing new opportunities for New Zealand export markets. TAMSIN POINTON – Geneticist

Tamsin is researching the effects of the NZ grass grub. She thought she wanted to be a doctor at first, but when she got to Otago she found a huge choice of subjects and decided she wanted to be a genetic scientist instead.

Forensic Scientistsx RACHEL PARKINSON – Microbial Forensics Scientist, ESR

Rachel is involved in world leading research using dead pigs and studying the bacteria beneath them as a clue to understanding how long something has been dead for. She loves her pigs and gives them all names…Esmeralda, Genevieve… She is doing a PhD and will finish it at The Body Farm in the U.S., where real human bodies that have been donated to science are used to determine time of death through research. SONYA FRY — Forensic Technician, ESR

Sonya got the opportunity to visit a forensic lab when she was a teenager and that got her hooked for life! She studied specialist subjects in criminology, biology, and microbiology – subjects that would help her get the job she wanted. When jobs came up in the specialist ESR unit, she applied until she got an interview. “I wouldn’t leave until they gave me the job!” She travels to crime scenes and takes all the evidence, from hairs to "probable blood" samples. Her work takes her all over the country and now she has gone overseas to pursue her study and sporting interests.
